CJ reviews the latest installment of the Puzzle Quest series.
The addictive bejeweled game mixed with rpg elements has returned with a Sci-fi theme in Puzzle Quest: Galactrix for the Nintendo DS. This time the game omits character class in favor of customizing a male or female pilot (and that’s all you get to pick as far as looks) to the play style of your choosing. Whether that be direct damage, status effects, defensive, etc. Like last time the presentation won’t impress you but the graphics and sound get the point across. It would have been nice to see you fighting the opposing ship on the top screen as you play but it’s definitely not a deal breaker, unlike your stench after a few days of gaming with no shower. Strangely for a DS title there are load times between certain screens and battles but nothing major, just 2 to 2.5 load breaks here and there.
This time the gameplay takes place on a Hex grid but it’s largely the same, you use mines instead of skulls to damage your opponent and you can now protect yourself by matching blue gems to raise your shields. Special moves still require certain colors to activate. The biggest change in Galactrix aside from the theme is the 6 variation of the puzzle gameplay that is used for hacking leapgates, haggling, mining, crafting, etc. This modes break down to either matching certain colors before time runs out and matching up items needed for material before running out of possible moves. Luck is a factor in modes but since blocks slide in from where you eliminate them you can still craft strategies.
The story won’t win any awards but seems a little more interesting than the previous game due in large part to the creative crew members you collect along the way.
Puzzle Quest: Galactrix continues the tradition of interesting casual gameplay which will make passing the time more fun... almost as fun as complaining about you HDDVD player being osbolete already.
